My husband Phil was admitted to Whiston Hospital in 2020 for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, he contracted Covid 19 and was taken to Intensive Care where he had a cardiac arrest and was placed on a ventilator. Thankfully due to the excellent care and dedication of the staff he came home.
Recently we joined the ICU Steps Support Group, and we both feel this is when his true recovery started. We met who we call the A Team, Emma, Alison and Kirsty. Their exceptional kindness, professionalism and positivity has made such an amazing impact on Phil's life. He had lost confidence and struggled with his physical and mental health.
He now looks forward to his monthly group meeting as the people he meets have something in common and have shared experiences. He can speak honestly and openly knowing he has the support network around him.
I can visibly see the difference in Phil. It's been a long time since he smiled laughed and engaged with people. This group is an asset to patients who have been on ICU and a definite aid to recovery.
